This photograph was captured in October 2010 along the Suijia Railway near Nancha, Heilongjiang, China, featuring a freight train powered by a GE-built HXN5 diesel locomotive, a locomotive developed from the American GE AC6000CW platform.
On an autumn morning, I climbed to the top of the mountain overlooking the railway and waited for the train to appear. From this elevated viewpoint, the tracks curve through a vast valley surrounded by deep autumn colors, while layers of morning mist drift between the mountains and above the river.
The distant train becomes part of the landscape rather than dominating it, creating a dramatic balance between railway power and the wilderness of northeastern China. The warm morning light, red autumn foliage, winding river, mountain railway, and sea of mist came together for a fleeting scene that could only be captured from high above the valley.
